Types of Snus
Snus is classified along three independent axes: format (loose or portion), pouch type (original, white, white dry or all-white) and size (large, slim, super slim or mini). Strength is a fourth variable. Any snus product is a combination of these, which is why the naming looks more complicated than it is.
Most guides list twenty product names in a row and leave you no better off. The useful approach is to treat the axes separately. Once you know that a “White Portion Slim Strong” is a white pouch type in a slim size at a strong nicotine level, every product name in the category becomes readable.
Loose Snus and Portion Snus
The first division, and the oldest.
Everything below applies to portion snus. Loose snus has no pouch type and no size, because you make both yourself.
Portion Types
The pouch itself varies in moisture, and moisture drives almost everything about the experience.
| Type | Pouch surface | Contents | Release | Drip | Staining |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Original portion | Moist | Moist | Immediate, up to ~45 min | High | Yes |
| White portion | Dry | Moist | Gradual, longer | Lower | Minimal |
| White dry portion | Dry | Dry | Slowest, longest | Very low | Minimal |
| All-white pouch | Dry | Plant fibre, no tobacco | Varies by brand | Low | None |
Original Portions
Brown, pre-moistened on the surface, and deliver flavour and nicotine within seconds. They also produce the most saliva and are the type most likely to stain teeth. This is traditional snus at its most direct.
White Portions
Skip the final moistening step in manufacturing. The pouch stays dry on the outside while the tobacco inside remains moist, which slows the release, extends the session and cuts drip substantially. Most people moving from original portions do not go back.
White Dry Portions
Drier again, in both pouch and contents. They drip minimally and last longest, at the cost of a slower start and a milder initial taste.
All-White Pouches
Contain no tobacco leaf at all — plant fibres carry the nicotine instead. They are the nicotine pouch category rather than snus proper, though they sit on the same shelf and are used identically.
You will also occasionally see perforated portions, which have small holes in the pouch material to speed up release, and long portions, a stretched shape introduced to spread the contents further along the gum.
Why “White Snus” Means Three Different Things
This is the single most confusing term in the category, and it is worth being blunt about.
Depending on who is writing, “white snus” can mean a white portion containing tobacco, a white dry portion containing tobacco, or an all-white nicotine pouch containing none. Three different products. Retailers use the phrase inconsistently, and the ambiguity is not accidental — in markets where tobacco snus cannot legally be sold, calling a nicotine pouch “white snus” borrows the heritage without the tobacco.
If it names tobacco, it is snus. If it names plant fibres, cellulose or eucalyptus, it is a nicotine pouch. The colour of the pouch tells you nothing about which one you are holding.
Portion Sizes
Size affects comfort, discretion and how quickly nicotine reaches you, because a larger pouch has more surface area in contact with your gum.
One caveat: these categories are not standardised. What one manufacturer calls a regular portion, another calls large, and slim weights vary meaningfully between brands. Treat the labels as a guide and the gram weight as the real number.
Mini does not automatically mean weaker — several brands sell mini pouches at mid or high strengths.
ZYN’s mini range covers multiple nicotine levels in the smallest size.
Strength Types
Traditional snus quotes nicotine in milligrams per gram of product. Nicotine pouches usually quote milligrams per pouch. The two are not interchangeable, and comparing them directly is the most common mistake buyers make.
Because a portion weighs under a gram, the actual nicotine in the pouch is always lower than the mg/g figure suggests. Brands also use dot systems, numbered scales and words like Ultra and Danger Strong, none of which are standardised between manufacturers. The milligram figure is the only thing worth comparing.
Flavour Types
Four broad families cover most of the market.
Tobacco snus stays mostly within the first family. The tobacco-free brands have pushed hardest into the other three.
Which Type Should You Choose
Loose snus is worth trying once you know what you like — the dose control is genuinely useful, but learning to roll a portion while also learning your tolerance is two problems at once. The practical side of placement and timing is covered in our guide to using snus, and the broader background sits on our snus category page.
Frequently Asked Questions
What are the main types of snus?
Snus divides into loose and portion formats. Portion snus then splits into original portions, white portions, white dry portions and all-white pouches, which differ in moisture and tobacco content. Each is available in large, slim, super slim and mini sizes at several nicotine strengths.
What is the difference between original and white portion snus?
Original portions are moistened on the surface as well as inside, so they release flavour and nicotine immediately, produce more saliva and can stain teeth. White portions skip that final moistening, leaving a dry pouch with moist contents, slower release, longer session, much less drip and minimal staining.
Is white snus the same as nicotine pouches?
Not necessarily. “White snus” is used for white portions and white dry portions, which contain tobacco, as well as for all-white nicotine pouches, which do not. Check the ingredients rather than the colour: tobacco means snus, plant fibres mean a nicotine pouch.
What size snus pouch should I use?
Slim suits most people, weighing around 0.7 to 0.9g and balancing comfort against flavour. Large pouches at roughly 1g deliver more quickly, while mini pouches at around 0.3g are the most discreet. Size categories are not standardised between brands, so check the stated weight.
Which type of snus is strongest?
Loose snus can feel strongest because you control the portion size and it releases immediately. Among portions, extra strong white dry products carry the highest concentrations, with some exceeding 40 mg/g. Strength depends on the product rather than the format.
Does the type of snus affect how long it lasts?
Yes, considerably. Original portions typically run up to 45 minutes with a fast start and early fade. White portions last longer, and white dry portions longest of all, since drier contents release nicotine and flavour more gradually rather than front-loading them.
