How We Test
Every product on SnusMarket goes through the same process. That is the entire point of having one: a score only means something if the product next to it was assessed the same way, by people using the same reference points, over the same period of use.
This page describes that process in full, what we buy, how long we use it for, what we record, and where the limits of our method are. If you want the scoring rubric and how the five dimensions combine into a final number, that is on ourHow We Rate page. This page is about what happens before a score exists.
What We Test With
-
We buy the products we test
Products are purchased at retail, from the same retailers our readers use, at the prices our readers pay. This is deliberate: it keeps our stock the same stock you would receive, and it means a brand cannot influence coverage by controlling supply.
-
We test more than one can
A single can tells you about a single can. Moisture level, portion consistency, and pouch fill vary between production batches, and a review built on one purchase risks describing a manufacturing outlier as a product characteristic.
Where a brand or retailer supplies a sample, that is stated on the review itself. Samples go through the identical process and are scored against the identical framework. A supplied sample has never changed a score and does not carry a different threshold.
How Long We Test For
Products stay in rotation for a defined period before a review is written. First impressions of an oral pouch are unreliable, the flavour profile at thirty seconds is rarely the flavour profile at fifteen minutes, and nicotine release behaves differently on day one than it does on day five once you are used to the format.
Testing is done in normal use rather than in a single sitting. A product used ten times across a week, in different conditions and at different points in the day, produces a more representative picture than ten portions in one afternoon.
Palate Control
The Five Dimensions
Every product is assessed against the same five dimensions. They are recorded independently, before any overall judgement is formed, so that a product which is excellent in one area does not pull the others up with it.
Aroma
Assessed on opening the can and again on removing a portion. We record the intensity of the first hit, how accurately it matches the flavour it claims to be, and whether it reads as natural or synthetic. Aroma sets expectation, and a large gap between how a product smells and how it tastes is itself a finding worth recording.
Taste
The core of the assessment. We record the flavour on first placement, how it develops over the first few minutes, where it settles for the bulk of the portion, and how it finishes. We note sweetness level, whether any bitterness appears, and how much salt is detectable. Flavour accuracy is judged against the claim on the can. A product marketed as blackcurrant is assessed on whether it tastes like blackcurrant, separately from whether it tastes good.
Texture and Fit
How the pouch behaves under the lip: material feel, whether it is soft or coarse, how much moisture it releases and how quickly, and whether it drips. We record how well it stays in position, whether it swells, and how noticeable it is when talking. Format and size are noted alongside this, slim, super slim, large, mini, since fit is partly a function of dimensions and partly of the material.
Longevity
How long the product remains worth keeping in. We record the point at which flavour meaningfully drops off, the point at which the nicotine effect plateaus, and the total usable time before the portion is spent. We record the manufacturer’s stated nicotine strength and we record perceived strength in use, separately. These frequently diverge, particularly across brands using different pH formulations, and the gap between them is one of the more useful things a review can tell you. We do not measure nicotine content: We have no laboratory capability, and any strength figure on this site is either the manufacturer’s own or our subjective assessment of the experience, always labelled as which.
Value
Assessed as price per can and price per portion, against the current market rate for comparable products in the same category and strength tier. Value is judged relative to alternatives rather than in isolation. A premium product is not marked down for costing more if the quality justifies it, and a cheap product is not marked up for being cheap if it is unpleasant to use.
Who Tests
Testing is done by named members of our editorial team, each with a public contributor profile setting out their background and the categories they cover.
Testers work from a standard record sheet, completing each dimension before moving to the next, and note their observations during use rather than reconstructing them afterwards. Where a product is contentious or the initial assessment is borderline, a second tester runs it independently before publication.
What We Do Not Test
Being explicit about the limits matters as much as describing the method.
- We do not conduct laboratory analysis: No nicotine assay, no pH measurement, no ingredient verification. Chemical figures on this site come from the manufacturer.
- We do not make health assessments: We are not medical professionals and we do not evaluate, compare, or comment on the health effects of any product.
- We do not test long-term effects: Our window is a matter of weeks, which tells you about a product and nothing about extended use.
- We do not test every product from every brand: Coverage prioritises what readers are actually searching for and buying.
Community Scores
Retesting
Products are retested when a brand reformulates, when the format or strength changes, when packaging indicates a revised recipe, or when community feedback suggests the product no longer matches our published assessment.
Where a retest changes our conclusion, the review is updated, the change is dated, and the previous assessment is noted rather than deleted.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do you buy the products you review?
Yes, as standard. Products are purchased at retail. Where a sample was supplied by a brand or retailer, that is disclosed on the review in question.
Does a free sample get a better score?
No. Samples run through the same process against the same framework as purchased products, and the fact of supply is disclosed on the page.
Do you measure nicotine content in a lab?
No. We have no laboratory capability. Stated nicotine figures come from the manufacturer, and our own strength observations are subjective assessments of the experience in use, always labelled as such.
How many people test each product?
Each product has a named primary tester. Borderline or contentious products are assessed independently by a second tester before publication.
Why do your strength impressions sometimes differ from the number on the can?
Perceived strength depends on formulation, pH, moisture, and pouch material, not just nicotine content. Two products at the same stated milligram figure can feel substantially different, and we report both figures separately for that reason.
How often are reviews updated?
Products are retested when they are reformulated, repackaged, or when community feedback indicates our assessment no longer matches the current product.
