VELO Nicotine Pouches
VELO is British American Tobacco’s flagship nicotine pouch brand and the number one nicotine pouch brand in the UK. It is also one of the most widely distributed nicotine pouch brands globally, available across Europe, North America, Africa, and the Middle East. VELO is tobacco-free, smoke-free, and spit-free, a slim white pouch placed under the upper lip, delivering nicotine through the oral mucosa with no combustion, no vapour, and no tobacco leaf.

What distinguishes VELO from most competitors is the breadth of its range. With over 15 core flavour profiles across European markets, multiple strength tiers from 2mg to 17mg, two standard formats plus a newly launched third, and a sensation-labelling system that organises the range by physical character rather than just strength, VELO offers more variety than any other major nicotine pouch brand. In 2024 alone, BAT sold over 8 billion VELO pouches globally.
This page covers the full VELO range, its brand history, formats, strengths, flavours, and how it compares to alternatives.
Brand History – From EPOK to VELO
VELO’s origins go back to EPOK, a white snus product made by Swedish company Winnington AB. Unlike traditional snus, EPOK used a cellulose-based filler instead of tobacco leaf, making it technically tobacco-free despite the snus format. British American Tobacco acquired Winnington AB in 2017 and discontinued the EPOK brand in 2018, replacing it with two products: VELO, targeted at the US market, and LYFT, launched across European markets.
Both performed strongly. In 2022, BAT consolidated the global portfolio under a single name, rebranding LYFT as VELO across European markets. The pouches inside remained identical, the change was naming and packaging only. LYFT has subsequently been relaunched as a separate, distinct premium brand with its own product line, while VELO has continued as the mainstream global brand.
The most significant evolution came in 2024, when VELO underwent a comprehensive global rebrand. New colour-coded packaging replaced the previous all-white cans, making different flavour categories immediately visually distinguishable at retail. Nearly every product was renamed to use clearer, more descriptive language consistent across markets, VELO Ice Cool Strong became Crispy Peppermint, VELO Freeze X-Strong became Mighty Peppermint, VELO Fresh Jalapeño became Lime Flame. The pouches themselves were unchanged; only the names and packaging updated.
The 2024 rebrand also introduced the VELO Sensations sub-range, heating flavours offering a warming, spiced sensation alongside the existing cooling options, and a four-sensation labelling system (Frosty, Cooling, Tingling, and Heating) that helps users understand what physical experience to expect from each product beyond just flavour.
Most recently, in September 2025, BAT launched VELO Shift, a genuinely innovative extension of the line featuring hexagonal cans made of 90% bio-based material and an oval-triangle pouch shape that departs from the standard slim format for the first time in the category’s mainstream history.
What Is Inside a VELO Pouch?
VELO pouches contain no tobacco leaf, tobacco stem, or tobacco dust at any stage. The core ingredients are pharmaceutical-grade nicotine (plant-derived, extracted from tobacco but not a tobacco product in the traditional sense), microcrystalline cellulose as the bulking agent, water, table salt, xylitol, sodium benzoate, food-grade flavourings, benzoic acid, and sucralose as sweetener. Formulations vary slightly across specific product lines but the same core ingredient base applies throughout the range.
VELO pouches are designed to be slightly moister than some competing brands, which means flavour activation tends to be faster, users typically notice full flavour within the first five to ten minutes rather than the slower release of drier pouch formats like ZYN.
VELO Formats
Slim
The standard VELO format. Slim pouches weigh approximately 0.7g each and measure around 23mm by 8mm, the standard slim format used across the nicotine pouch category. Available in the full range of flavours and strengths, in cans of 20 pouches. The Slim format provides a comfortable, rounded experience under the lip with a clear flavour and nicotine delivery profile.
Mini
VELO Mini pouches weigh approximately 0.5g and measure around 18mm by 7mm, roughly 30% smaller than the standard Slim. Cans contain 15 pouches. The important technical point about VELO Mini is that because the same amount of nicotine is contained in a smaller pouch, the effective concentration is higher, which some users experience as faster or more intense delivery compared to the same mg figure in a Slim format. Current Mini variants include Bright Spearmint (6mg), Crispy Peppermint (10mg), and Purple Grape (10mg), among others.
VELO Shift
Launched in September 2025, initially in Sweden, VELO Shift is the first significant format innovation in the mainstream nicotine pouch category. The hexagonal can is made from 90% bio-based material, a significant step toward sustainable packaging in a product category that generates substantial single-use waste. The pouch itself uses an oval-triangle shape rather than the standard rectangular slim, designed for ergonomic comfort under the lip. VELO Shift pouches contain 8mg of nicotine and come in 20 per can. The sub-range uses a curated selection of elevated flavour profiles rather than mirroring the full standard VELO catalogue.

How to Use VELO Pouches
Place one VELO pouch between your upper lip and gum, either centrally or slightly to one side, whichever is more comfortable. There is no need to chew or suck the pouch. Leave it in position for 20 to 45 minutes. VELO’s slightly moister formulation means you will notice flavour activation fairly quickly, within the first five minutes for most products.
You may experience a tingling or warmth under the lip when first placing a pouch. This is a normal response to the pH adjustment in the pouch material and typically fades within a few minutes.
When you are done, remove the pouch and dispose of it in the catch compartment in the inside of the can lid, or in a bin. Do not swallow used pouches. If you are new to nicotine pouches, start with a Mellow tier product (2mg or 4mg) and assess the effect before trying higher strengths.
VELO and ZYN are the two dominant nicotine pouch brands globally, both widely available and well regarded. Their differences are meaningful enough to affect which is the right choice for different users.
VELO has the wider flavour range, over 15 core profiles in Europe versus ZYN’s 10 in the US. VELO’s fruit and berry options are more developed, and the Sensations sub-range has no ZYN equivalent. VELO’s range extends to 17mg at the top end in European markets, higher than ZYN’s 13.5mg ceiling.
ZYN has a notably drier pouch format, which some users prefer for its slower, more controlled nicotine release. VELO’s moister format delivers faster flavour and nicotine onset but may require more frequent replacement for some users. ZYN’s FDA PMTA authorisation in January 2025 gives it a regulatory credibility in the US market that VELO currently does not hold for its standard range.
For beginners, either brand is a reasonable starting point. For users who prioritise flavour variety, VELO is the stronger choice. For users in the US seeking an FDA-authorised product, ZYN is currently the relevant option.
VELO in the United States
In the US market, VELO products are sold as VELO Plus, available in eight flavours across three strengths (4mg, 7mg, and 10mg). The US range is narrower than the European catalogue and reflects the distinct flavour preferences of the American market. VELO Plus does not currently hold FDA PMTA marketing authorisation for its US products, which distinguishes it from ZYN (authorised January 2025) and On! Plus (authorised December 2025). It remains commercially available in the US market and is widely distributed.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is VELO the same as snus?
No. VELO is frequently called “VELO snus” colloquially, but this is technically inaccurate. Snus is a tobacco product made from ground tobacco leaf. VELO is tobacco-free, the nicotine is extracted from tobacco plants but no tobacco material is present in the pouch. The format is similar (placed under the upper lip) but the product composition is entirely different.
What is the strongest VELO pouch?
Mighty Peppermint at 17mg per pouch is the current VELO strength ceiling and one of the strongest products from any mainstream global nicotine pouch brand. Freezing Peppermint Max at 16.8mg is the next most powerful.
What is VELO Shift?
VELO Shift is a sub-range launched in September 2025 featuring a hexagonal can made of 90% bio-based material and an oval-triangle pouch shape, the first significant format departure from the standard slim pouch in the mainstream category. It is currently available in a limited number of markets.
Is VELO the same as LYFT?
They share a history. LYFT was the original European name for BAT’s nicotine pouch product line before a 2022 rebrand consolidated everything under VELO. The original LYFT products became VELO with no change to formulation. LYFT has since been relaunched as a separate, distinct brand with its own product line.
How long does a VELO pouch last?
Most users keep a VELO pouch in for 20 to 45 minutes. VELO’s slightly moister format means flavour peaks earlier than drier competing brands, typically within the first five to ten minutes.
Does VELO contain tobacco?
No. VELO pouches contain pharmaceutical-grade nicotine derived from tobacco plants, but no tobacco leaf, tobacco stem, or tobacco dust is present. VELO is a tobacco-free product.
