Swedish Snus – The Complete Guide

Swedish snus is a moist, finely ground tobacco product that you place under your upper lip. There is no smoke, no spitting and no chewing. It has been made in Sweden for over two centuries, and it is still one of the most distinctive products in the nicotine world.

Author: Chris Hayward

This guide explains what snus is, how it is made, and how the formats and strength levels differ. It covers the classic brands, where snus can legally be sold, how to store it, and how it compares with the tobacco-free nicotine pouches that have grown up alongside it.

The Classic Swedish Snus Brands

Good to know

Swedish Match has been owned by Philip Morris International since 2022; the brand names are unchanged. Nicotine strength varies by product within each brand, so always check the mg/g figure on the can. For the tobacco-free brands we cover, see our full brand directory.

What Is Swedish Snus?

Snus is ground tobacco mixed with water, salt and flavourings, sold moist in a round can. You place a portion between your upper gum and the inside of your lip, and nicotine is absorbed through the lining of the mouth. A portion usually stays in for somewhere between 20 minutes and an hour, depending on the format.

It comes either loose, which you shape into a small plug yourself, or in pre-filled pouches called portions. Unlike many smokeless products, snus is placed under the upper lip, not the lower one, and you do not spit.

Is Snus the Same as Chewing Tobacco?

No. Snus is often called “Swedish chewing tobacco”, particularly in the US, but it is not chewed and it is made differently. American dip and moist snuff are fermented, sit under the lower lip and involve spitting. Swedish snus is heat-treated rather than fermented, sits under the upper lip and needs no spitting.

How Swedish Snus Is Made

Snus starts with dried tobacco, ground to a fine powder. This is mixed with water and salt and then heat-treated for several hours in closed vessels. That step is what separates Swedish snus from fermented products.

Why the heat treatment matters

Heat treatment stops bacterial activity. It is the main reason Swedish snus generally contains lower levels of tobacco-specific nitrosamines (TSNAs) than fermented smokeless tobacco.

After cooling, the manufacturer adds flavourings, adjusts moisture, and adds sodium carbonate to set the pH before the snus is packed into cans or portions. In Sweden, snus production falls under the Swedish Food Act, so additives must be approved for use in food.

A Short History of Snus

1822
Ettan first produced in Stockholm
1970s
Pre-filled portions arrive
1995
Sweden joins the EU with its snus exemption

Tobacco reached Europe in the 16th century and was first fashionable as nasal snuff. In Sweden, users gradually moved from sniffing it to placing moist snuff under the lip. That habit became the product we now call snus.

In 1822, Jacob Fredrik Ljunglöf began producing Ettan in Stockholm, and the brand is still sold today. Industrial production improved consistency through the 19th century. Pre-filled portions arrived in the 1970s and made snus far easier to use, and portions now dominate sales.

The modern legal picture was set in 1995. When Sweden joined the EU, it kept an exemption from the EU-wide ban on selling oral tobacco. That is why Sweden remains the only EU country where snus can be sold in shops.

Snus Formats: Loose, Original Portion, White and Mini

The format changes how quickly snus takes effect, how long it lasts and how much it drips. It matters as much as the brand.

FormatLookOnsetTypical sessionDrip
Loose Brown, shaped by hand Fastest Varies with the amount Highest
Original portion Brown, moist pouch Fast Around 20-30 min Moderate
White portion Paler, drier pouch Slower (a few minutes) Around 40-60 min Low
All white Near-white pouch Slower Around 40-60 min Very low
Mini Small pouch, original or white Moderate Shorter Low
Original portion
Original portion snus is moistened at the factory, so flavour and nicotine come through almost immediately. The trade-off is more drip and a brown pouch.
White portion
White portion snus uses the same tobacco in a pouch that is not pre-moistened. Your saliva activates it, so it starts more slowly but lasts longer and drips less. All white portions go a step further, with a pouch and contents that stay pale throughout.
Mini
Mini portions are smaller versions of either format. They are the most discreet option.

Loose Snus

Loose snus is the original form. You take a pinch from the can and press it into a small plug, known in Sweden as a prilla, then place it under the lip. Getting the shape right takes practice.

Loose snus gives the most direct contact with the gum and lets you decide exactly how much to use. It also leaves more residue than portions. Most loose snus is sold in larger cans and should be kept cold once opened.

Snus Strength Explained

Snus strength is shown as milligrams of nicotine per gram of product (mg/g). Some cans also give milligrams per portion, which is more useful when comparing products, because portion weights differ. Tobacco-free nicotine pouches usually list strength per pouch instead.

Most brands also print dots or a word such as “strong” on the can. These scales are brand-specific, so the mg/g figure is the only reliable comparison.

Regular
Up to about 8 mg/g
Many standard General and Ettan products
Strong
About 8-14 mg/g
Strong versions of mainstream brands
Extra strong
About 14-22 mg/g
Extra strong lines from several makers
Extreme
Above 22 mg/g
Siberia, which sits far above this threshold

Siberia’s reputation for extreme strength carries over to its tobacco-free range, which we cover in our Siberia nicotine pouch guide.

⚠

If you already use nicotine and are moving to snus, compare mg/g figures rather than can labels. Snus contains nicotine, which is addictive; it is not a product to start using if you do not already use nicotine.

Snus Flavours

Traditional snus flavours are built around the tobacco rather than covering it.

Tobacco and bergamot
Bergamot is the citrus oil that also flavours Earl Grey tea. It adds a bright top note to the earthy tobacco base. General is the best-known example.
Tobacco-forward
Some snus, Ettan being the classic case, has no bergamot or mint. The flavour is malty and earthy and comes almost entirely from the tobacco and the heat treatment.
Herbal and floral
Göteborgs Rapé is known for juniper and lavender notes on a tobacco base. Lundgrens builds its range around Swedish landscapes, with more contemporary flavour profiles.
Mint
Mint snus layers a cooling note over the tobacco rather than replacing it. Most major makers offer at least one.
Dark and smoky
Röda Lacket uses fire-cured tobacco for a heavier, smoky profile that appeals to traditionalists.

The rules for tobacco snus are stricter than for most nicotine products, and they differ sharply by country. This table is a summary, not legal advice. Always check the current rules where you live.

MarketStatusNotes
Sweden Legal Sold in shops; minimum age 18
Norway Legal Not in the EU; minimum age 18
Rest of the EU Sale banned EU law bans selling oral tobacco outside Sweden; rules on personal imports vary by country
United Kingdom Sale banned Supplying oral tobacco has been illegal since 1992; check current rules before bringing any in
United States Legal Minimum age 21 nationwide since December 2019; online sales are tightly regulated
Australia Sale banned Smokeless tobacco products cannot be sold

In the US, the PACT Act means the postal service will not carry smokeless tobacco, and online sellers must verify age and handle state taxes. State rules on tobacco and nicotine products also vary; our US state guides cover the details for each state.

In most of Europe, the practical alternative is tobacco-free nicotine pouches, which fall under different rules. Those rules also vary by country, and some markets restrict strength or flavours. Readers in Canada can find province-by-province rules in our Canada guides.

How to Store Snus

Snus is a fresh product. In Sweden it falls under food legislation, and makers ship and store it chilled.

Keep it in the fridge
Cold storage slows drying and keeps the flavour and nicotine release consistent. Snus left warm for weeks turns dry and flat.
Keep the lid closed
An open can dries out quickly. Keep cans away from heat and direct sunlight, and store them in a sealed bag in the fridge so they don’t pick up food smells.
Freeze for longer storage
Freezing unopened cans is a common way to keep snus for months. Thaw it slowly in the fridge before use.
Check the date
Snus past its best-before date is not dangerous, but it will usually be drier and weaker.

Snus and Health

Snus contains nicotine, which is addictive, and it is not a safe product. In 2019, the US Food and Drug Administration authorised eight General snus products to be sold with a modified-risk claim. That claim states that using those products instead of cigarettes lowers the risk of certain diseases. The authorisation covers those specific products only.

Snus vs Nicotine Pouches

Nicotine pouches look and sit like white portion snus, but they contain no tobacco leaf. The pouch is filled with plant fibre, nicotine and flavourings. Several traditional snus makers now produce both; Swedish Match, the maker of General, also makes ZYN.

If you like General or other bergamot snus

Lundgrens Mörk is the natural starting point. It pairs a dark tobacco-style flavour with a bergamot note, without any tobacco leaf.

If you prefer a tobacco-forward profile

Lundgrens Höståker keeps the flavour in tobacco territory at a slightly higher strength.

If you like mint snus

Skruf, a Swedish snus maker, offers its Super White mint pouches in 6 mg and 10 mg versions. Lundgrens Kvällsbris is a darker, rounder mint.

⚠

Nicotine pouches still contain nicotine, which is addictive. Check that they are legal where you live before ordering. If you want the ritual without any nicotine, see our guide to nicotine-free pouches.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does Swedish snus taste like?

It depends on the product. General tastes earthy and tobacco-forward with a bright bergamot note. Ettan is malty and earthy with no added citrus or mint. Göteborgs Rapé is herbal, and Röda Lacket is dark and smoky.

What is the difference between original and white portion snus?

Original portions are moistened at the factory, so they work almost immediately but drip more. White portions are drier, take a few minutes to start, and last longer with less drip.

Do you have to spit with snus?

No. Snus sits under the upper lip and does not require spitting. That is one of the main differences from American dip.

Does snus stain your teeth?

Original portions can discolour the gum line and teeth over time with heavy use. White and all white portions stain less. Tobacco-free nicotine pouches stain the least.

Can I buy snus in the EU or the UK?

Selling tobacco snus is banned in every EU country except Sweden, and in the UK. Rules on bringing it in for personal use vary by country, so check the current rules before ordering. Tobacco-free nicotine pouches are available in far more markets.

How old do you have to be to buy snus?

It depends on the country: 18 in Sweden and Norway, and 21 everywhere in the US.
